We begin with the Doug Birks Division recipients today.

Samuel Lewis – Kamloops Storm – Lewis graduated from Sa-Hali Secondary Kamloops in 2021 and has been studying Business Administration at Thompson Rivers University. Lewis is interested in pursuing a career in law and practicing wills and estates. He would like to play collegiate hockey in Canada or the U.S. Since 2018, Lewis has given back to his community by helping out with Kamloops Ribfest, the One Stop Goaltending Camp, TRU Winterfest and New Life Mission.

“Sam is a dedicated and focused hockey player trending upwards in his game, achieves high marks in his academics, is engaged positively in the community, and is a leader amongst his peers,” said Storm GM Matt Kolle. “In addition to being an assistant captain with the Storm, Sam held down a full course load at Thompson Rivers University while working full-time to pay for his hockey and school. Sam has a very bright future.”

Ethan Sanders – 100 Mile House Wranglers –  Sanders is a graduate of Nor-Kam Secondary School in Kamloops and will study Sports Management at Arizona State University, where he will play hockey for the Sun Devils next season. Sanders, the recipient of the Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship,  has given back to the community helping at the Kamloops Ribfest, helped schools with JumpStart Day, Safe Ride Home and more.

Sanders captained the Wranglers and as Head Coach-GM Dale Hladun said, he was selected because of “his veteran presence and leadership skills.”

“He was well liked and respected among his peer group as well in his home community of 100 Mile House. We placed a lot of responsibility on Ethan’s shoulders in his role as captain,” said Hladun. “I believe Ethan will be a successful person no matter the path he chooses in life as a career, family man, and as a member of his community.”

Porter Trevelyan – Revelstoke Grizzlies – Trevelyan graduated from Vernon Secondary School in 2021 and has interest in attending Okanagan College to get his Commercial Helicopter Pilot Certificate in Kelowna. His goal is to work for search and rescue in the Okanagan. He also has aspirations of playing in the American Collegiate Athletic Association or the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League. In the community, he has helped with Meals on Wheels 2-3 hours per week, minor hockey, Revelstoke Railway Museum events, the Revelstoke Rotary Club and other organizations. His favourite was the minor hockey skates as he could pass on his knowledge and love for the game.

“Porter has the qualities of perseverance and is goal-oriented. In addition to his team commitments, Porter held a part-time job at a local flooring store, never failing to attend to all of his commitments,” said Grizzlies Head Coach-GM Ryan Parent.
