The Calgary Dinos, featuring Kamloops Storm alumni Josh Maser and Max Patterson, are the top seed heading into the U Sports Cavendish Farms University Cup this week.
The Dinos are the Canada West champs after going 25-3 in the regular season, and then 4-2 in the playoffs. On March 5, the Dinos won their first Canada West title since 1996 when they defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 2-1, with Maser scoring one of the goals. On March 3, Maser scored the overtime-winner in a 3-2 final. At the 5:41 mark of the extra period, Maser got enough of a touch to elude the Alberta netminder.
On March 8, Maser was named one of two U Sports hockey players of the week for the period ending March 5. USports.ca reported that Maser came in clutch to help the Dinos win a hard-fought series against the Alberta Golden Bears to earn the Canada West conference championship title. Maser had an assist and scored the overtime game-winning goal in Game 1. He followed that up with another game-winning goal in a come-from-behind victory in Game 3 to bring the Dinos to their first Canada West title since 1996.

Heading into the U Cup, Maser has four goals and two assists. Maser is in his second season with the Dinos. As a first-year player, in 2021-22, he had three goals and nine points in 21 games, This season he had 13 goals and 25 points in 33 games. Prior to joining the Dinos, Maser played for Allen in the ECHL. He also played six games in the AHL with the Iowa Wild, scoring a goal. After playing six games with the Storm in 2016-17 and recording 12 points, Maser made the jump to the WHL where he spent four seasons with the
Patterson, a Kamloops product, began his junior career with the Storm in 2014-15 as an affiliate after playing for the Okanagan Hockey Academy, and had five points in four regular season games. He added eight points in seven playoff games. Patterson then spent five seasons in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice, Swift Current Broncos, Everett Silvertips and Seattle Thunderbirds. Patterson had 16 goals and 37 points in 34 games this season, his second with the Dinos.
In the playoffs, Patterson has three goals and five assists.
